Newquay Coastguard Training

Newquay Coastguard volunteer team are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year so being prepared with the necessary training is key. Some of the types of shouts we have been involved in can vary from missing persons, despondent individuals, (sadly) body recovery, dogs who have fallen over the cliff edge, casualties, vehicles stranded on the beach to ordnance (explosive material) and pyrotechnics washing up along our coastline.

To be able to work as effectively and efficiently as possible, regular training sessions and scenarios are paramount to our success as a team. Regular scenarios that we train include:

  • Search & rescue
  • Water rescues
  • Rope rescues
  • Clifftop rescues – these are done with and without an injured ‘casualty’ or dummy
  • Beach rescues – with and without an injured ‘casualty’, involving the search & rescue helicopter, flares and winching of casualty
  • Ordnance & pyrotechnic safety protocols

We sometimes train the above scenarios with our fellow Padstow and St Agnes Coastguard teams. We are also trained in navigation, first aid and relevant communication techniques and abbreviations; some of which include:

IRT – Initial Response Team – 3 or 4 team members will go and investigate the situation and report back to Falmouth Coastguard
BURT – Back-Up Response Team – whole team are paged
CRT – Coastguard Rescue Team
